Time Marches On

One thing I have noticed becoming more difficult to control in my older age (NO! Not my bladder!) is this phobia I have been living with my entire life......my fear of man made structures.

As far back as I can remember I have been terrified of bridges and tall buildings. My parents apparently found these fears somewhat amusing and seemed to relish in taking every available opportunity to exploit it. How you ask? Even if you did not ask I am gonna tell ya anyway.

We traveled quite extensively when I was a . We of course hit most of the typical tourist type destinations as well as some off the beaten path areas as well. They made me walk across this rope suspension bridge in Colorado over the Royal Gorge even though I cried the entire way. I distinctly remember my dad laughing when I got nearly hysterical when cars would cross it and cause the whole bridge to shake and sway. That trip to the Royal Gorge was a two-fer! They made us ride in a gondola across the gorge as well!

When we went to Washington DC I was petrified as they made us ride the subway......

Here in Michigan they thought it would make a "nice" vacation for us to attend the annual "Bridge Walk" across The Mackinac Bridge. Those unfamiliar might be interested to know the Mackinac Bridge is 5 miles long! We got a certificate of completion when we reached the other side and they stamped your time oh how long it took you to cross right on it. I made damn good time...... 42 minutes! Cuz I was terrified and couldn't wait to get off! I ran most of the way!

We visited the Grand Canyon and took pack mules down to the bottom......yup.......terrified!

As I have gotten older, besides aging beautifully like a fine wine, (purple coughs and chokes) I have increased the intensity and frequency of bouts with my phobia. I also added MANY more things to inspire fear.

I now worry that the tree in my front yard that was hit by lightning and split about a foot and a half down the center will fall on my house. Of course it is right by the master bedroom...

When the floors creak and squeak I worry they are rotting and will cave in...

I mentally add up the weight of the people in my car and worry if my shocks can handle it......

Too much snow on the roof? I am sure it will cave in....

If I stay in a Hotel/Motel I am OK as long as it is 3 stories or less, BUT, I must be on the top floor!

Don't even get me going on elevators.......

I am scared shitless to fly....(at least this one is common)

So, as you can see I have my work cut out for me, eh? Gimmee a tissue......I've got an issue!

I have no control of when the phobia will hit me or how severe it will be. I try not to let it stop me from doing things, I have flown 11 times. Scared shitless every single time! LOL

Do you have any phobias?

My fear is that when I fall out of a 10th floor window or get run over by a truck that my underwear won't be clean. After those kinds of accidents, I think another accident in my underwear is inevitable!

I can help you with your fears, Purple. Whenever you want your hand held, just fly down and see me. (I live across the bridge from the airport.)

I am afraid of enclosed spaces.
I will not fly in the middle seat.
As a child, my cousin locked me up in a trash bin and left me there for what seemed like hours.
Since then I have been afraid of being claustrophobic
I love a trashcan that can add

No, no phobia's but I commiserate with you as I am sure they are heartstopping at times.
I have a daughter that makes me face my fears by making me ride roller coasters and any other scary ride in the amusement park.
Next she wants to have us make a bungy jump, that one scares the shit outa me, but will have to do it or she will make my life miserable by telling my friends I am a coward.

I'm scared of other drivers. All those other assholes on the road just get in my frickin' way. I mean, when they see me coming shouldn't they MOVE OVER!! I guess the only true phobia I have is of tight places, such as crawling through caves or tight crawl spaces. This is why I want to be cremated and have my ashes spread on a high space overlooking the ocean. Or maybe I'll just have them ground up to a fine powder, mixed with a little vinegar, and have all the women I have ever known use me is a douche. I think I would love that final resting place. That is one tight place I'm not scared of.

You have a couple on that list that bother me a little, but the worst for me is riding on elevators in tall buildings.

I fear God, and because I fear him I fear nothing else.

You on the other hand. I feel so sorry for you. That was pure mental abuse.

Love and a big warm affectionate hug

Hmmmmm.......I like those first two lines. I consider myself a christian but still have the phobias......

Yes, I think my parents abused me a bit. They say they were helping me "conquor" my fears.

lets see....

BRIDGES.
OVERPASSES if they go way over the freeway and curve around.
BUGS that fly. that includes butterflies LOL
SNOW.
the DENTIST.
HEIGHTS in general, but only outdoors. Inside I'm just fine.

I'm better with flying than I used to be...I'm not crazy about it, but as I've taken so many trips in the past 18 months or so to see my pirate I've gotten used to it.

purpletrashcan replies on 9/22/2008 8:41 pm:
SHIT!

I forgot the dentist on that list.......LOL I hear ya on that one sister!

Glad you keep conquoring your fears for a good cause.

I kinda feel the same way about bridges and stuff as you do. I'm a troll, I live under the bridge (all you Michiganders know what I mean). My oldest son attended college at Northern Michigan University in Marquette ..... that's in the U.P. ...... above the bridge. I drove across the Mighty Mac about a bazillion times during those years. You'd think I'd get used to it, but nnnnooooooo! To this day, every time I cross it, my palms start to sweat, my heart races, I have a death grip on the steering wheel and everyone else in the car laughs at me (fuckers!). I get queazy just looking at those pictures of the guys building it. I can't imagine what I'd do if I had to walk it like you did! I'm impressed that you actually did it ( even if you were scared shitless).

purpletrashcan replies on 9/22/2008 8:35 pm:
Did you ever see "Dirty Jobs" where Mike Rowe (the host) walked way up on the suspension cables of the Mackinac Bridge to paint it? Yikes!
