Suitable Jokes? Comments on People? Always speak well of others.

My favourite friend is always praising me. He says I write brilliant poems. He says I'm great at comedy. I write poems and do stand up comedy. You have to be careful to keep the audience on your side.

Some comedians can get away with a rant. But even a self-directed criticism can fail. One small comedian made jokes about being small and poor. He was talking to a group of self-made businessmen. They were proud of the fact that they had made money. The booed him off stage - a famous comedian!

An ode is a poem of praise. But I wrote a poem to my ex which mocked the way he wrote letters of complaint. I could not see why he did not see the joke. Nor could anybody else. Now I can see what was wrong. I criticized him in the first line.

I criticized him for criticizing others. And I had done the same! Now I'm wondering if I'm doing the same in this blog. I keep re-writing it to sandwich the criticism between praise.

I thought the very fact that I had written him a poem was giving him attention and that was flattery enough. It wasn't. If I had praised him, that would have made him happy.

The best jokes subtly praise somebody. You can get away with a joke if you start and end with praise and sandwich the criticism in the middle. But if you have no preface, and the punchline is criticism, it won't work.

What is the message in a joke?

Here are two which have offended women

a) A man tells a joke in a public place about sex. the punchline is about the fact that the woman smells.

Do you think the other people want to hear that over dinner? Do you think his girlfriend will feel confident about having intimate relations?

b) A man tells a woman that his previously girlfriend had a funny smell. Will this make girl two feel confident.

Much better to talk about the good qualities of previous girlfriends. If you make any critical comment about a previous girlfriend or spouse, first compliment the listener on their having the opposite quality.

For example, if a man told me that my perfume was gorgeous, or that I always smelled delicious, I could then hear a story about another woman who didn't. I might still feel sad about the other women, sorry for her, and wondering what he might say about me afterwards. But at least it would be better.

The best rule is never to make fun of the opposite sex or criticize them. Always speak well of others. Whether on stage, in poetry, in profiles, emails and blogs.
