Let Freedom Ring

I read a lovely post on eroticneed's blog, [post 2000002], and pondered some of the points and questions she posed.

I'm definitely a lefty/liberal, though I support my own beliefs rather than the Democratic party (or any other party for that matter). I keep up on current affairs, domestic & international, and am never short on opinions and criticims regarding the US government.

I know some feel that it is blasphemous to criticize the US government. They feel that, as an American, I should be grateful for the freedoms I enjoy and respect the US government (including the armed forces) for providing those freedoms to me. I'm not going to argue with that perspective. It's a valid perspective to have, it's just not how I see things.

But, I have spent time thinking (and feeling) today about my life as a US citizen and how it compares to others. Today I drove freely around town, running errands, not thinking once about what I was wearing, who might see me or if I had enough gas. I hung out with neighbors and friends and didn't think once about what religion they subscribe to, what any of them were wearing or what we would do if a bomb went off. It took my pup for a run and didn't think once about whether we were safe, if we would step on a landmine, or if we would have anything to eat when we got home.

Today there were Iraqis who feared for their lives; perhaps they didn't go to the store ... because they were afraid of being killed, or didn't have any money, or there was no food at the store.

Today there were Palestinians and Israelis who feared for their lives. They probably didn't do many things for fear of being killed ... just for believing what they feel is true in their hearts.

Today their were Africans and Indians (from India) and Brazilians and Chechens and Tibetans and Mongolians and Indonesians who went hungry while their politicians grew fat, who went thirsty while their "leaders" drank bottled water, who feared for their lives simply because of their genetic heritage.

Today there were Russians who kept silent, who feared to speak their thoughts because of the retribution it might bring.

Today there were Native Americans who cursed July 4th and wept for all the blood shed.

Today there were Americans in our armed forces who cried because they could not be with their families.

I am not trying to name all peoples here, nor am I meaning to say that I truly understand what these people's lives are like. I am only trying to say that I have a beautiful life, and I am very grateful for the privileges I enjoy ... though I could be MUCH more grateful and that is a concrete goal I am working towards. And just because I have not agreed to take up a weapon and kill others in order to defend these privileges does not mean that I'm not doing anything to protect them.

May we all be grateful and all serve our countries in ways that are meaningful to us.
