Romeo and Juliet

I recently saw the operatic version of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", as performed by the New York Metropolitan Opera. The presentation was quite well done. Actually, the entire cast and crew all did very well, but for me, this question remains.

Is it just me, or has this play been overdone a bit much? I feel that there have already been so many adaptations of this Shakespearean tragedy into feature length movies, with some being exemplary, such as director Franco Zeffirelli's version in 1968, and others which were an insult to the original work, such as "Romeo + Juliet", a 1996 hip and modern rendition, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, and was directed by Baz Luhrmann.

I don't object if it's done as artistic endeavor. But sometimes you can tell it was just a known commodity-- to make money at the box office.

Hope you had a great birthday.
